Abstract

Binge drinking is associated with metabolic syndrome in university students

Objective: To evaluate the association of practicing alcoholic binge (BA) with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Methods: The study was conducted with 90 undergraduate nutrition students, in 2010. We analyzed glucose, triacylglycerol (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), blood pressure and waist circumference. To calculate the prevalence of MetS, we used the diagnostic criteria of the American Heart Association, 2009. To the binge practice was used criterion of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2004.

Results: The prevalence of MetS was 5.6% and 17.8% of BA. There was association between the practice of BA and MetS (p = 0.003).
